Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): First Aid knowledge for every African
CPR is short for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. Cardio in the word here represents the circulation of blood by the heart in a human being. Pulmonary represents breathing while Resuscitation simply means to bring back to life. CPR is administered when someone's breathing or pulse (or both) stops. When both stop, sudden death has occurred. Sudden death could be said to have several causes including poisoning, drowning, choking, suffocation, electrocution and smoke inhalation - but the most common is heart attack. Everyone should know the signals of heart attack and the actions for survival. They should also have a practical plan for emergency action.
2. The ABCs of CPR
CPR is a practical skill technique that is always said to be as simple as ABC: A is for Airway, B is for Breathing, while C is for Circulation. To effectively utilize this ABC Technique, the potential resuscitator must work on the victim of sudden death within 6 minutes of the incident. (S)he must act definitely and fast before it becomes too late.
After 6 - 8minutes, the Resuscitator might only just succeed in reviving a living individual no better than a vegetable; or lose the victim after all. It is also important that the resuscitator considers the situation at hand within a split second before acting. For example, if the victim was a helpless invalid bedridden for a long period, suffering from a medical ailment that naturally and finally leads to a long awaited death, then there should be no need to resist its occurrence.
