Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): First Aid knowledge for every African
CPR is short for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. Cardio in the word here represents the circulation of blood by the heart in a human being. Pulmonary represents breathing while Resuscitation simply means to bring back to life. CPR is administered when someone's breathing or pulse (or both) stops. When both stop, sudden death has occurred. Sudden death could be said to have several causes including poisoning, drowning, choking, suffocation, electrocution and smoke inhalation - but the most common is heart attack. Everyone should know the signals of heart attack and the actions for survival. They should also have a practical plan for emergency action.

8. Ratio for Rescue Breathing and Chest Compressions
If you must give both rescue breathing and external chest compressions, the proper rate is 30 chest compressions to 2 breaths. You must compress at a rate of 80 to 100 times per minute.
Neck Injury
If you suspect that the victim may have a neck injury (such as might occur in a diving or automobile accident for example), you must open the airway differently.
