Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): First Aid knowledge for every African
CPR is short for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. Cardio in the word here represents the circulation of blood by the heart in a human being. Pulmonary represents breathing while Resuscitation simply means to bring back to life. CPR is administered when someone's breathing or pulse (or both) stops. When both stop, sudden death has occurred. Sudden death could be said to have several causes including poisoning, drowning, choking, suffocation, electrocution and smoke inhalation - but the most common is heart attack. Everyone should know the signals of heart attack and the actions for survival. They should also have a practical plan for emergency action.

9. For Infants (Birth to 1 year) and Children (1 to 8 years)
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation for infants and children is similar to that for adults, but there are a few important differences. They are given below.
Assessment and Activation
If you don't get a response from an infant or child, activate help and begin CPR. If you are alone, do one minute of CPR before leaving to make the necessary call yourself. Return to the victim and continue CPR until help (EMS) arrives or victim is taken to the hospital.
