Economic Shackles in Disguise: Nigeria’s Stabilisation Without Freedom

The government’s so-called reforms have been cosmetic at best, punitive at worst. Currency adjustments, subsidy removals, and fiscal tightening are paraded as bold steps toward progress. But progress for whom? For the elite who can hedge their wealth abroad? For foreign investors who swoop in to exploit cheap labour and resources? Certainly not for the ordinary Nigerian who cannot afford bread, transport, or medicine.

Economic freedom means the ability of citizens to live with dignity, to access opportunities without being crushed by systemic inequality. Yet what we have instead is a cruel paradox: stabilisation policies that stabilise nothing but the suffering of the masses. Inflation eats away at wages, unemployment festers, and the promise of prosperity remains a mirage shimmering on the horizon.

The bitter truth is that Nigeria’s economic managers have mistaken austerity for reform. They have confused survival with success. Stabilisation is not freedom; it is a holding pattern, a pause button pressed on a collapsing system. And while they boast of “discipline” and “resilience,” the people endure hunger, insecurity, and despair.

Nigeria does not need stabilisation that shackles its people. It needs liberation — policies that empower citizens, unlock creativity, and dismantle the entrenched corruption that siphons wealth from the nation’s veins. Until then, every speech about stabilisation is nothing more than propaganda, every promise of reform another betrayal.

Economic freedom is not negotiable. It is the right of every Nigerian. And until our leaders grasp this truth, stabilisation will remain a hollow slogan, echoing in the empty stomachs of the people.
